A Walking Bible

As to my working with Burton, or being in his classes, my Freshman year at Ottumwa -- he was packing and getting ready to leave for Puerto Rico.

(He) tried to start a new work in Lake Alfred, FL and had extensive Bible studies with the Hall family, which evolved into a book "God and Evolution."

We had been guests in their home in Galax, VA and I knew he wanted to publish in his last years of his life and much of his charts and study materials went to Africa and the Caribbean. His ability to lay out the Voice and the Caribbean News-O-Gram put his publications head and shoulders above anything before or after. He raised things to a level of excellence.

His biggest encouragement to me was when I preached a sermon on the Rally in Orlando, FL when I just was out of Bible College and was a young man in my younger 20's with a head full of mush, I preached on "Modern Science and Creation" and he was so impressed he wanted to publish the whole sermon in the Caribbean News-O-Gram, which he did to the tune of six or more pages, and he treated me as a budding peer and a "Thinker."

I heard Barber preach but never had I sat in his classes at Ottumwa, and he came to Florida a year after I left. I always considered him a Walking Bible and one of the greatest minds of the 20th century Restoration Movement.

God bless, Richard J. Geringswald
