But there is one other consideration besides skill that puts uncertainty into the Monopoly game. We cannot know how far to move our game piece until the dice are rolled. We have no control over what will happen then. This is an element of chance that even the most skilled players face. You may draw the card that says, "Pass GO. Do not collect $200."
Life itself is like this. The Scriptures say:
I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.For the believer, the chance element has been removed. Hear what James says to Christians:
Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."For the Christian, we must acknowledge that the Lord's will substitutes for the chance element. We may be skilled in using our money, but the outcome depends on the Lord's blessings. He may increase our income. More likely, he may choose to decrease our outgo. He preserves us from expenses that could cripple us financially.
Playing the game of life, it's partly what you know and partly who you know. To know the Lord and having Him as a financial partner makes up for our lack of skills and insight.
Beginning now, let's be a team player with the Lord. If he can do big things like save us, then certainly he can make the difference in little things like the checkbook.
PRAYER for making God our financial partner.
